The development comes following reports that Israel plans to build 2,610 more settlement units in East al-Quds (Jerusalem), Reuters reported.

“The [UN] Secretary General [Ban Ki-moon] is deeply concerned at continued efforts to advance planning for new Israeli settlements in occupied East Jerusalem,” the UN said in a statement on Friday.

The UN statement stressed that no new settlement activity by Israel would receive international recognition, calling the Israeli move “unacceptable.”

“Recent developments in this regard have been unacceptable, particularly as efforts are ongoing to resume [Israeli-Palestinian] negotiations, and run contrary to the Quartet’s call on the parties to refrain from provocations,” the statement read.

The so-called Middle East “Quartet” — the United States, Russia, the European Union and United Nations — recently launched a bid to restart talks between the Palestinian Authority and Israel.

“The Secretary General reiterates that settlement activity in East [al-Quds] Jerusalem and the remainder of the West Bank is contrary to international law and to Israel’s obligations under the Roadmap, and must cease,” the UN statement further read.

The Palestinian Authority says it won’t resume talks with Israel as long as it continues expanding the illegal settlements.

The international community considers all settlement units built in the occupied West Bank to be illegal.
