Djokovic defeated the former world number one 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 in the men’s singles final on Sunday to win the Grand Slam and end Nadal’s reign as Wimbledon champion, Reuters reported.

The victory, his 50th win in 51 matches and his fifth win over Nadal, made him the first Serbian man to win Wimbledon, which is his third Grand Slam title after two Australian Open victories.

The 24-year-old Serb proved that he deserved his newly acquired world number one position, a status he had already guaranteed by beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semifinals.

Djokovic dominated the first two sets, but lost the third to the defending champion, before coming back to clinch the triumph.

“I managed to achieve a lifetime goal and I managed to make my dream come true, all in three days,” he said, while he was embraced by Serbian President Boris Tadic.

Central Belgrade also erupted with joy as hundreds of cheerful tennis fans paraded in the city’s Republic Square following his victory.

Earlier on Saturday, Czech player Petra Kvitova defeated Maria Sharapova to win Wimbledon women’s singles title.
