On Saturday, tens of thousands of anti-regime protesters attended the third and final day of a funeral procession for Ali Jawa, a 14-year-old boy who was killed by regime forces on Wednesday, August 31.
Activists say anti-riot police suddenly showed up at the funeral ceremony and began firing at the participants.
In addition, according to some reports, there have been casualties in the clashes.
Jawad was shot at close range, directly in the face, by a tear gas canister fired by Saudi-backed regime forces in the southern city of Sitra.
Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets across the Persian Gulf state since the incident to condemn the murder of Jawad.
Jawad was killed just three days after a televised speech by Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa on August 28, in which he announced a decision to pardon the demonstrators arrested during the popular uprising that began in February.
During his speech, King Hamad also promised to reinstate employees and students who have been dismissed for participating in anti-regime protests.
Immediately after the speech, demonstrations were held by Bahrainis, who deemed the remarks an insult to the hundreds of political activists held in regime prisons and the majority of the Bahraini people, who have turned against the US- and Saudi-backed Al Khalifa regime.
Bahrain Center for Human Rights President Nabeel Rajab noted that nothing had really changed since the king’s speech and the killing of protesters was continuing, saying, “The picture of the situation on the ground is totally different from the speech he delivered.”
