US National Security Advisor Tom Donilon told the visiting NTC official, Mahmoud Jibril, that the full recognition of the council would not be forthcoming, AFP reported Friday.

“During the meeting, Mr. Donilon stated that the United States views the (NTC) as a legitimate and credible interlocutor of the Libyan people,” the White House said in a statement.

However, Washington fell short of granting Libyan revolutionaries complete recognition.

“I don’t anticipate [an] action like that,” said Jay Carney, a White House spokesman.

Donilon also noted that Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi has lost his legitimacy in the North African and stressed US President Barack Obama’s call for the ruler to leave Libya immediately.

Libya has been the scene of fierce fighting between Pro-Gaddafi troops and anti-regime forces since mid February.

The Libyan regime has made several ceasefire declarations but continued its attacks on opposition forces.

The revolutionary forces want an end to Gaddafi’s decades-long rule.

The US and NATO have unleashed a punishing UN-mandated offensive against Gaddafi to force him to cede power, but the Libyan ruler has shown little indication of willingness to abandon his 41-year-old reign.
