Ten-man Iran beats S Korea in 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification match

Ten-man Iran has defeated South Korea 1-0 in a home game in Asia’s fourth round of 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification

The match was held at Azadi stadium in Tehran with 100,000 spectators in attendance on Tuesday.

Captain Javad Nekounam scored the solo of the game to give his country a sweet victory. He lashed the ball into the bottom corner after Ashkan Dejagah’s free kick from right was diverted back out towards the penalty spot by Andranik Teymourian.

Masoud Shojaei was sent off by the referee at the 55th minute after he flew in with a two-footed challenge on Oh Beom-seok.

Carlos Queiroz was also dismissed at the 81st minute for his objections to the referee.

In other matches of the day, Uzbekistan edged past Qatar 1-0 in Group A, and in Group B, Australia defeated Iraq 2-1 and Oman downed Jordan with the same result.

South Korea and Iran stand on top of Group A each with seven points, followed by Uzbekistan with five points. Qatar and Lebanon are at the bottom each with four points.

In Group B, Japan is in the first place with ten points, followed by Australia and Oman each with five points. Jordan has four points in the fourth position followed by Iraq at the bottom with two points.

On November 14, Iran will take on Uzbekistan in Tehran.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, while the two third-placed teams advance to the next round to determine the AFC participant in the intercontinental play-off
