Russia bans arms supplies to Libya

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree on Thursday that banned the supply of arms, ammunition and military equipment to Libya.

The ban would be a major setback for Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi, as Russia has been one of the key suppliers of weapons to Libya.

According to an order signed by Medvedev, Russia would “ban the export from the Russian Federation to Libya as well as the sale, delivery and transfer… of all types of arms and related materials, including weapons and ammunition, combat vehicles and military hardware,” Reuters reported.

The ban by the Kremlin is an additional restrictive measure to the United Nations Resolution 1970 imposed on February 26 in response to ruthless military attacks by pro-Gaddafi forces on Libyan revolutionaries.

The UN sanctions against Gaddafi have cost Russia USD 2 billion, as it had to suspend arms contracts with Libya.

Gaddafi has purchased USD 4 billion worth of weapons from Russia since the unrest began in the North African country.

Reports by human rights groups say over 6,000 people have been killed so far in the Libyan government’s deadly crackdown on anti-regime protesters
