The organizations sent letters to city officials, complaining about the police using force and arresting some journalists in order to prevent them from covering the dismantling of the Zuccotti Park encampment on numerous occasions, the Associated Press reported
The media groups are protesting against the treatment the journalists and photographers received while they were trying to do their job.
“The police actions of last week have been more hostile to the press than any other event in recent memory,” said a coalition of media groups in a letter to chief New York Police Department spokesman Paul Brown.
Other letters were sent to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, questioning why journalists were being blocked from covering the protests and even being “targeted for mistreatment.”
In one instance, a police officer grabbed a photographer, violently dragging him away from the encampment at the park.
Although city officials say the police had intended to keep journalists out of harm’s way, media organizations insist that police had deliberately suppressed coverage of the attack.
Shortly after midnight on November 15, New York Police began removing anti-corporatism protesters from the park. Some two hundred people were arrested in the process.
The Occupy movement emerged after a group of demonstrators gathered in New York’s financial district on September 17 to protest against the unjust distribution of wealth in the country and the excessive influence of major corporations on US policies.
Despite the police crackdown and the mass arrests, the Occupy Movement, which grew out of the Occupy Wall Street movement, has now spread to major US cities as well as other countries such as Australia, Britain, Germany, Italy, Spain, Ireland and Portugal.
