Vigilantes loyal to President Hosni Mubarak were targeting pro-democracy rallies, especially in remote areas, where human rights organizations are not active, Press TV correspondent in Cairo reported.

The developments come as hundreds of people have been killed or wounded in the southern Kharga city during two days of clashes between police and pro-democracy demonstrators.

Witnesses say hundreds of people were hit by live bullets after security forces opened fire on the demonstrators.

The death toll is expected to rise with some of the wounded in critical condition.

The protesters, angered by the killings, attacked police and official buildings.

They set several buildings on fire including the local headquarters of President Hosni Mubarak’s ruling National Democratic Party.

Our correspondent said Pro-government vigilantes have also targeted protesters in and around Cairo’s Liberation Square.

Hundreds of protesters are camping outside the parliament as part of their campaign to topple Mubarak. Anti-Mubarak protesters have attempted to block the parliament building.

The violent crackdown on anti-Mubarak protests has claimed the lives of more than 300 people since protests began 16 days ago
