“Instruments indicated the ship had moved, we are in the process of evaluating if it has found a new resting point to allow us to resume. For the moment we cannot even go near it,” fire department spokesman Luca Cari said.

Eleven bodies have been recovered so far and 24 people are still missing, while 60 people have been injured after the luxury cruise ship crashed into rocks on Friday.

The Costa Concordia, a 290-meter Italian cruise ship, was carrying approximately 3,200 passengers and 1,000 crew members when it hit a reef and started taking in water.

The ship’s captain Francesco Schettino has been arrested on suspicion of causing the accident. The vessel’s First Officer has also been detained.

A surfaced transcript of a conversation allegedly held between the captain and a port official suggests that he had left the ship before the passengers managed to escape.

Along with the salvage workers, a specialist team is to start drilling through the ship towards the 17 tanks that hold more than 2000 tons of fuel that could take several weeks.

The vessel had set sail from the port of Civitavecchia near Rome and was on its way to Palermo. Divers are continuing to search the ship, which is lying on its side near the Tuscan island of Giglio.
