The blast took place in a district of the city of Dayr al-Zawr, located 450 kilometers (279 miles) northeast of the capital Damascus, early on Monday as Riad al-Asaad was crossing the area in a car

Asaad sustained serious injuries in the incident and lost his right leg. One of his bodyguards was also killed in the attack

On Sunday, Syrian army soldiers killed several foreign-backed militants fighting against the government forces in the northwestern province of Idlib

The army said it had “eliminated terrorists” who were committing acts of looting and intimidating the citizens in Armala Town in Jisr al-Shughour, Idlib

Government troops also killed a large number of militants in several areas in Binnish and al-Nairab towns. The soldiers also targeted foreign-backed gunmen in the areas of Kifr Najd, Nahla, and Kureen in Idlib.

In addition, Syrian government forces launched attacks against militants in the governorates of Damascus, Hama, Lattakia, Homs, Dayr al-Zawr, and Aleppo on Sunday and killed a large number of them.

The Syria crisis began in mid-March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security personnel, have been killed in the violence. Several international human rights organizations say the foreign-sponsored militants have committed war crimes.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants fighting the Syrian government are foreign nationals
