Libyan fighters’ spokesman Mohammad Abdel-Rahman said tanks rolled out of Gaddafi’s Bab Al-Aziziya compound and started firing early Monday after a group of fighters tried to get in, the Associated Press reported.

The gunfire and loud explosions have been going on for more than 30 minutes, but no further details of the fighting are available.

Meanwhile, sound of heavy fighting was heard in the south of the Libyan capital since early Monday.

Abdel-Rahman also cautioned the fighters against Gaddafi loyalists, saying they remain a threat as long as the beleaguered ruler remains in power.

The reports of fresh clashes in central Tripoli came following the arrest of Gaddafi’s second son Seif al-Islam and the surrender of his eldest son, Muhammad, to the fighters.

There are no reports of the embattled ruler’s whereabouts, but he broadcast three audio messages on Sunday, asking his supporters to take to the streets and confront the fighters.

This is while, thousands of happy residents poured into the streets of Tripoli, waving flags of anti-regime forces and dancing in joy following the entrance of fighters to the capital.

Libya’s former Prime Minister Abdessalam Jalloud, who defected from Gaddafi’s regime on Friday, has said that it was too late for the authoritarian ruler to strike a deal to quit power and that he would probably be killed.

Libya has been the scene of intense fighting between government troops and opposition forces since a revolution seeking to topple Gaddafi began in mid-February.
