Regime tanks shelled opposition fighters, who were trying to seize Gaddafi’s compound on Tuesday, AFP reported.

The fighters earlier said they took control of the city’s airport and the state television building.

Meanwhile, opposition forces in the nearby western city of Misratah said they intercepted a column of government troops moving toward Tripoli, adding that the convoy was from the city of Sirte and consisted of several busses packed with soldiers and mercenaries.

Sirte, which is located between the city of Brega in the east and Misratah in the west, is Gaddafi’s hometown and a bastion of his regime.

Meanwhile, Gaddafi’s son Seif al-Islam has made a surprise and defiant appearance in Tripoli two days after opposition fighters claimed they had captured him in the city.

Seif al-Islam turned up outside a hotel near Bab al-Aziziyah compound, situated in the southern suburbs of Tripoli.

He claimed the opposition forces had in fact fallen into a trap by moving into Tripoli, adding the city was still under government control.

The Libyan fighters swept into the heart of Libya’s capital city early on Monday, and seized the control of much of Tripoli without facing significant resistance from regime forces.

Libya has been the scene of intense fighting between regime troops and fighters since a revolution seeking to topple Gaddafi began in mid-February.
