On Friday, Gaddafi told crowds of supporters in Tripoli’s central Green Square to “prepare to defend Libya.”
“We will fight them and we will beat them,” he told his supporters. “Sing, dance and be ready.”
He also pledged to open all weapon depots in a bid to arm forces and mercenaries loyal to his regime.
Addressing the crowd, Gaddafi called on his supporters to get ready to fight for Libya, for dignity and for oil.
This is Gaddafi’s third statement this week.
The remarks come as hundreds of foreign mercenaries as well as troops still loyal to the Libyan ruler have opened fire on protesters in different neighborhoods in Tripoli.
Reports say the gunfire started after the Friday Prayers when crowds began chanting anti-Gaddafi slogans.
Fighting has erupted outside Tripoli over the past 24 hours. Mass protests and clashes have been reported in several cities across Libya.
Forces loyal to Colonel Gaddafi have been trying to keep Tripoli under control while the government has lost its grip on more cities in the east and the west of Libya.
Over one thousand people have been killed and more deaths are feared as Gaddafi is brutally crushing the revolt.
The United Nations Human Rights Chief has warned about the escalating crackdown in Libya, urging the international community to intervene in support of protesters.
