It was in the interest of Germany to hand over security
responsibilities to Afghan authorities. Merkel said both countries would negotiate a treaty to intensify partnership.
The meeting was held only shortly after bomb blasts at mosques in Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif killed scores of people, mainly Shia Muslims commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, grandson of the
Prophet Mohammad.
Karzai called the discussion with the German Chancellor fruitful; Afghans were valuing friendship with Germany and looking forward to making it stronger. He promised to tackle corruption while terrorism in Afghanistan has yet again increased security concerns.
The Afghan President spoke of an unprecedented attack. And a day after the Afghanistan Conference the future of the war-torn country remains unclear. Analysts are highly skeptical that Afghanistan could become a functioning state in the near future.
