واژه زنادقه جمع زندیق است. این كلمه ریشه فارسى دارد و در اصل‏«زند دین‏» زن دین بود. مزدكیان (۱) خود را زند دین ‏مى‏نامیدند. طریحى در مجمع البحرین مى‏نویسد: زنادقه گروهى از مجوسیان بودند. سپس این كلمه بر هر ملحدى در دین استعمال‏ گردید. (۲)

امام صادق علیه‌السلام فرمودند: ۱ – طلبتُ الجنه، فوجدتها فی السخأ: بهشت را جستجو نمودم، پس آن را در بخشندگی و جوانمردی یافتم. ۲ – و طلبتُ العافیه، فوجدتها فی العزله: و تندرستی و رستگاری را جستجو نمودم، پس آن را در گوشه‏گیری (مثبت و سازنده) یافتم.
