The Asian record holder topped Group A with a 65.21-meter throw on the third day of the preliminary round of the 2011 World Championships in the South Korean city of Daegu on Monday, Mehr news agency reported.

The result put Haddadi in the Tuesday night’s men’s discus throw final.

Robert Harting from Germany finished in the second place with a throw of 64.93 meters followed by two-time Olympic gold medalist Virgilijus Alekna from Lithuania with 64.21 meters.

“I am satisfied with my performance in the event… I want to do my best on Tuesday to get the gold medal,” Haddadi said.

About 2000 athletes from 203 countries are competing in the 13th IAAF World Championships in Athletics. The event finishes on September 4.
